Ankle sprains can be frightening and painful, but they’re not a sign of weakness. Instead, these injuries are more common than you might think, and they usually don’t require any medical intervention to heal. However, ankle sprains are more likely to cause more serious problems if left untreated, so follow these tips for a faster recovery.
Here are some general guidelines for a speedy recovery:
• Don’t put weight on the ankle or take a step while the pain is still present.
• Maintain an upright position, with your knee slightly bent and your foot on the ground.
• Once you’re able to walk, start moving your ankle up and down gently to loosen up any stiffness.
• Apply ice for 15-20 minutes every hour to reduce swelling and pain.
• Use CAM Walkers if necessary to help pain while walking.
Make sure to ice your affected ankle for 10-15 minutes at a time every few hours until the swelling has gone down.
Sprains can take a long time to heal, the earlier you start your recovery, the better.
Ankle sprains hurt and are often painful, but they don’t need to keep you out of work or school for a long time. If you are able to walk on your own and resume normal activities, then do so. But be careful not to go back too quickly.
