Why the Iceman CLEAR3 Was a Game-Changer.
When the DonJoy Iceman CLEAR3 Hit the Market… and Tanked Built It a Real-Life Fish Tank Home
Remember that wild era when cold therapy went from “bag of frozen peas” to high-tech recovery machines overnight? Let’s rewind to 2013, when DonJoy dropped the Iceman CLEAR3 and celebrated in the most over-the-top way possible — by having Animal Planet’s Tanked build a massive, custom aquarium shaped like the machine itself.
If you haven’t seen the clip yet, here it is:
Wayde and Brett from ATM (the kings of crazy custom tanks) rolled up to DJO Global headquarters and unveiled what they called the “Iceman Tank.” It wasn’t just any aquarium — it was a super-sized, bulletproof acrylic replica of the CLEAR3 cooling unit, complete with:
- 1.25-inch-thick molded acrylic that looked exactly like the real machine
- Clear tubes running everywhere (filled with gel to mimic the water flow)
- Custom ice props sculpted by the prop master
- A wave-tile facade and coral inserts that made it pop
They even picked the fish to match the vibe: Bicolor Angels (gold and blue for the sports teams DJO worked with), Monos (tough little guys that can handle fresh or salt water), and a Blue Tang because, well, “black and blue” is basically the universal color of every post-op knee we’ve ever seen.
Why the Iceman CLEAR3 Is a Game-Changer
Before the CLEAR3, cold therapy units were either too basic (no consistent temperature) or too loud and clunky. DonJoy flipped the script with:
- Dual-pump recirculation technology that keeps the water perfectly chilled for hours
- Crystal-clear reservoir so you can actually see the ice level (hence the “Clear” name)
- Quiet operation and easy-to-use controls
- Compatibility with a full range of pads (knee, shoulder, ankle, universal — you name it)
Suddenly athletes, post-op patients, and physical therapists had a machine that delivered controlled, consistent cold therapy without babysitting it every 20 minutes.
Fast-Forward to Today
Over a decade later, the Iceman CLEAR3 (and its sibling the Classic3) are still staples in clinics, athletic training rooms, and home recovery setups. The technology has only gotten better, but that 2013 launch moment — complete with fish swimming through a giant knee-brace aquarium — remains one of the most memorable product reveals in the orthopedic world.
So here’s to the CLEAR3 for giving us reliable cold therapy… and to Tanked for proving that even medical devices can have a sense of humor and a killer fish tank.
